Every year we have a new lineup of workshops.

A note about money, and FreakDown:

We want Freakdown to be financially feasible for years to come. This event has never been a profit making endeavor. Ticket sales goes directly into the event

paying artists for performing, buying food and kitchen supplies, paying for infrastructure, renting porta potties, deco etc.

We also want Freakdown to be accessible for anyone excited about attending and we know that everyone’s financial reality is different. We strive to bring equity to our ticketing system, rather than raising ticket prices across the board.

There is no judgment or value attached to which tier best matches your financial situation. We hope that whoever can pay more, will do so, knowing that their money offsets others who need to pay less.

Tiered system -

  • First tier: $350 (I can pay this price without thinking twice. Please note that a portion of this ticket will help subsidize lower tier and scholarship tickets, and will ensure we are able to pay artists and production staff stipends.)
  • Second tier: $300 (I am financially stable and although I may have to account for it, I can afford this price).
  • Third tier: $250 (I need just a little extra financial assistance this year and would appreciate paying a lower amount).
  • Bipoc Inclusion Ticket: $200 We offer those who identify with a historically or currently marginalized or oppressed identity group to pay this tier amount, even if your financial situation matches that of a higher tier, because we understand that the financial playing field has never been fair or level, and the U.S. and Oregon have a history of excluding Black, Indigenous, and people of color community members from access to power and resources and financial accumulation.
  • Community Support tickets: Paying any of the above tier amounts will reduce my ability to pay for day-to-day survival expenses, ie. rent, food, etc. If I am not able to get a lower price ticket, I will not be able to attend FreakDown. People in this tier may be eligible for EBT or OHP. *If you want to receive a Community Support Ticket for you or your family, please email community@gmail.com There is no application to fill out. Camping & Food

General Camping: We offer tent camping in an area of the property affectionately called “The Triangle” located in a triangular wedge of land nestled between Keller Creek and the Yachats River. This is flat, shaded and only accessible by footbridge during the event.

Due to limited space, we ask that you keep your camp footprint small and don’t create large “living room” spaces around your tent.

This area is not ideal for families with children or those with mobility concerns.

Family Camping: We have family camping in our most accessible area of the event. Family camp is situated close to amenities on a gently sloped lawn with moderate shade and sun. . It is equipped with a small kitchen for quick prep of necessary in-between meal snacks and an interactive play zone for kids of all ages. Note: Family camp is approximately 100 yards from the closest creek access point.

Due to limited space, we ask that you keep your camp footprint small and don’t create large “living room” spaces around your tent. Shade is limited in Family Camp, please plan accordingly.

If you indicate interest in staying in the Family Camping area, our Family Camp Coordinator will be in contact with you ahead of the event.

Car camping: There is limited car camping available, however, we recommend tent camping.

Car camping is located across the road from the event and separated from activities. This can be a good option if you need more quiet or private space or need to camp in your vehicle for any reason. It is also sunnier and not as lucious.

Quiet Camping: This shaded area is reserved for elders, those who go to bed early and families with noise-sensitive children. Quiet Camp is further from the main festivities and located across the river, therefore children must be with their responsible adult at all times while at camp.

FOOD

We have a central kitchen that provides breakfasts and dinners. Meals have vegan/vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Other food notes:

Coffee and tea are provided in the morning.

Please bring your own snacks and lunch.

Please bring your own utensils, cup, and bowl/plate.

To limit fire danger, there will be a small stove available for personal use within the larger FreakDown kitchen. Please do not bring your own stoves. We encourage you to bring lunches and snacks that do not require a stove.

Be Prepared

  • Camping gear
  • Tent, bedding, etc.
  • Toiletries and towel (for shower or swimming)
  • Headlamp
  • Personal dishes (bowl, spoon, fork, non-glass cup)
  • Swimwear if you don’t want to be naked in the river
  • Lunches, snacks, and beverages
  • A water jug (there is potable water on site, but we recommend bringing a 1-2 gallon jug with you so you can have water accessible to you at your own camp)
  • Layers for all the weather (sunny, warm, cool, rain, etc.). FreakDown is 9 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and it can get quite cold at night so we recommend bringing warm jackets and hats. And of course bring COSTUMES!
  • Shoes that you can dance and walk on grass with and that will keep your feet warm at night.

  • Cash! Please bring cash for late night menu options and more.
  • Earplugs (Freakdown is a compact event and sound travels to all camping areas. Tents are close together and music and DJ sets will go late on Friday and Saturday nights, so please plan accordingly and bring ear plugs/white noise machines, etc).

Optional items:

  • Costumes or fun clothes to donate/exchange at the Wee Petite Boutique.
  • A photo or small item for a remembrance space.
  • Choice books for the book exchange shelf.
  • Costumes and clothes to participate in our daily themes (these will be announced closer to the event)
  • A cart to carry your supplies into your camping area (we also provide wheelbarrows)
  • Fire extinguisher (We do have fire suppression kits at FreakDown, but we encourage each camp to be self-sufficient with their own as well)

Crew Descriptions

Ellipse Outline
Planet Space Element

Regardless of what tier ticket you bought we encourage everyone to sign up for a shift at FreakDown. This is a volunteer led event. Signing up for a shift is a great way to meet new people and helps keep our ticket costs down. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Crew Descriptions

We work together in order to build community, keep ticket prices low, feel purposeful, and create an environment of giving. We seriously can't pull this off without you! The following is a list of our current volunteer crews. Crews are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and based on the needs of the event. For certain crews, the crew lead will reach out to you before the event to coordinate shift times. For all others, there will be a short crew orientation on Saturday morning.

KITCHEN: We provide breakfast and dinner at Freakdown and we need all the help we can get in the kitchen! Plan to help with at least 2 shifts (cooking breakfast, cooking dinner, a mid-day prep shift for dinner, or cleaning after either breakfast or dinner) throughout the event.

AMBIANCE RESET: Help beautify the space during the event, help reset the common areas every morning before workshops start so we can do it all over again!

ARTIST RELATIONS: Help receive and orient artists/performers as they arrive (particularly if they arrive outside of registration times), and generally support artists on site. Work with camp hosts to mark off camping areas, and help coordinate communication with the tech team.

COFFEE & TEA: If you are an early morning riser, this crew is for you! Make sure to have coffee and tea ready for the masses by 7:30am.

FIRE CREW: Work with fire crew lead to make sure fire extinguishing systems are in place; be willing to stay up late and monitor the fire pit.

FIRST AID: You must have medical training to be on this crew (WFA, WFRR, EMT, Paramedic, Doctor, Naturopath, etc). There is a large first aid kit provided at FreakDown that is accessible to all attendees, but since we are 15 min away from town, and 45 minutes fron the closest urgent care we want to make sure there are people around who can help in case of an emergency. There are no shifts for this crew, we will ask you to identify yourself in the welcome circle and may put a First Aid sign at your tent so that attendees know they can go to you for help.

PRE-EVENT DECOR & AMBIANCE: Focus on beautifying the space, set up decor and ambiance. Must be available to prearrange arrival on or before Wednesday morning (8/14).

REGISTRATION: Helping with the registration process as people arrive, either checking people in at the registration table, or helping them get settled and oriented in camp. Must arrive by Thursday (8/15).

VIBE RANGERS: Roam the property and make sure everyone is having a good time and staying safe and with respect for the land and our neighbors. You will likely do one or two shifts throughout the event. Shifts are usually at night till early morning, so this crew is great for night owls.

WATER CREW: Make sure that hand-washing and drinking water stations are full and replenished daily and as needed throughout the event.

SANITATION: Empty trash, recycle cans, and sanitize/restock porta potties. This work happens multiple times daily as needed throughout the event. You can make it glamorous!

SHUTTLE CREW: Help shuttle cars to the lot down the road. Must be sober during shift. Need to be onsite by the morning of Thursday (8/15).

SET UP: Help with pre-event responsibilities of prepping the land, structures and technical requirements of the event. Must be able prearrange arrival on or before Wednesday morning (8/14)

TAKE DOWN: Help with general deconstruction and cleanup. Must be able to stay the full day on Monday (8/19).

TRIANGLE CAMP HOSTS: Help welcome people as they arrive at the camping area, show them available camping spaces, know the property boundaries, etc. Be available for questions. Must arrive by Thursday (8/15), or morning on Friday (8/16).

TECH: SOUND & LIGHTING: Assist with the set up and running of sound, lighting and stage management. It is preferred that you have some basic stage tech experience.

Mission & Values

Spiral Line
Ellipse Outline

FreakDown’s mission is to build a multi-generational community, where we can explore creativity and self expression, deepen our connection to each other, and experience the value of interactive play. FreakDown invites you to embrace a childlike perspective, which has a rippling effect of joy and wonder that permeates throughout the event. By offering opportunities to play and create together, FreakDown empowers us to navigate life’s challenges and reminds us to find joy in our day to day. Playing together in community, allows us to not only increase our individual vitality but also strengthen our collective resilience and joy. By investing in this joy, we are better equipped to spark positive social change inside and outside of our community.

  • Inclusion - We strive to grow and expand our community by welcoming differences in economic, educational and cultural backgrounds, nationality, race, age, sexual orientation, gender expression, mobility, neurodiversity, and more.

  • Stewardship - We value tending for and caring for the land and waterways as utmost important. We deeply love the place where FreakDown occurs, and want the event to be sustainable for years to come.

Important note: We also acknowledge that the land on which FreakDown takes place sits on the traditional and unceded territory of the Alsean people of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz. The effects of colonialism are on-going and pervasive, and the resulting inequity and harm is still felt by many Indigenous people. FreakDown is committed to supporting the Siletz Tribe and other Native people by donating a portion of our proceeds each year to ongoing Indigenous justice work. FreakDown seeks to continue education and awareness around how to cultivate meaningful and reciprocal relationships with tribal citizens.

Planet Space Element
  • Community Building - We strive to be a place where people build new friendships, strengthen old ones, have opportunities to connect deeply, and expand their community. We are immensely grateful for and celebrate the multi-generational FreakDown community.

  • Next level play - At the FreakDown we have the opportunity to create supportive and fun learning experiences where we can explore our creativity, self expression, and the ways that we connect together. Along with increasing our creative potential, FreakDown strives to create a safe and inclusive space for everyone to step into powerful places for deepening relationships where we can explore our creativity, self expression, and the ways that we connect together through play.

  • Equity & Belonging - As a community, we recognize power structures and oppression exist as a result of present and historical marginalization and colonization of people based on origin, nationality, race, gender, ability, religion, class, and more. We are committed to creating an environment where we can recognize the effects of oppression, recognize our potential involvement, and recognize our own biases. The ultimate goal is to learn from each other and prevent further oppression so that we can be a community force of positive change.

We also acknowledge that festival culture in the US has historically been predominantly white, and within that reality has existed overt and covert racism (cultural appropriation, microaggressions and more). The organizers of FreakDown are committed to the ongoing work that cultural change requires, and are open to feedback. If you identify as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color, we invite you to meet with the BIPOC affinity group at FreakDown.

Group Agreements

In order to create a space where we can feel safe to explore our creativity, connect genuinely with each other, and build a long-lasting community, we need:

  • Consent first and always! We seek an environment built around mutual consent and respect for a person's decisions and autonomy of their own body.

  • Respect yourself and each other - this includes, personal boundaries, consent, creative expression, forms of communication, self talk, etc. We have no tolerance for harassment and discrimination of any kind.

  • Respect the land, the infrastructure and the art - We are grateful to be on the land and be able to co-create this event with you. Many people have poured their hearts and souls into the infrastructure and art, please don’t damage it.

  • Make Space/Take Space - We encourage you to speak up and share, and to recognize when to make space for others. If you usually feel safe and confident speaking your thoughts, try creating space for others to share. We can learn so much by deeply listening to each other. If you aren’t one to usually speak up first, we want to hear from you!

  • Share from “I” perspective - share from your own experience, not from others.

  • Tend to impact - even with the best of intentions, there can be unintended harmful impact. Sometimes the best thing to do is apologize for the impact, rather than explaining the intention. Understanding the difference between intention and impact can help us to move into greater accountability and empathy as we listen to each other without the need to defend ourselves.

  • Hold ourselves and each other accountable to these agreements - this can be as simple as, “hey, that comment landed funny. Can I tell you why?”

About Us

Spiral Line

FreakDown started in 2008 with a small group of close friends. It has evolved over the years and grown to 200-300 participants but maintains the core connection points of creative exploration, play, and community. FreakDown is part festival, part summer camp, part party in the woods.

The 5 day event is an experience of whimsical play, mind-bending quests, family-forward activities, nourishing food and world-class entertainment. Throughout the weekend there will be a variety of programmed and scheduled activities which participants can opt in to; there are limitless ways to engage! You can play in one of our immersive spaces, take a workshop, perform in the beloved variety show, dance your ass off, trade clothes at the boutique, and spend time in the river. It is a space to explore creativity, connect and play together, and build community in ways that stretch far beyond the event.

FreakDown is more than just a festival in the woods, so we ask everyone to be present the entire weekend so that we can build a strong and supportive community together.
